We’ve reached the beautiful season of Autumn (and by Autumn, I’m not making a heavy-handed metaphor for people entering their retirement years), I mean that wonderful time of the year when leaves fall, the temperature has finally dropped and Winter nights are around the corner. A time to snuggle under a blanket or gaze into a warming fire.
For many of us, time races by – there’s always too much to do and too little time, you may feel exhausted by responsibilities, juggling work, life and loved ones. When it all feels too much, it can be comforting to stop, stand still, take a deep breath and look at the stars – just to have a moment to yourself and take stock. So time, is my thought for this month.
I speak to a lot of people about retirement and the first thing people often consider are their finances. Of course, they’re important but what you do with them is more important. It’s true that your available finances will influence what you can do in retirement, but while you’re still working towards it, consider WHAT you want to do in retirement because if you aren’t clear about that, how will you know how much finance you need?
I once read a lovely thought – “How does a child spell love?” and the answer was TIME. Time with Mum and Dad, time to play, time with pets, time to celebrate, time for fun!
We’re not too different when we grow up are we? As adolescents, we look forward to having time to be independent and be with friends. If we’re parents, we look forward to having some time alone! When we’re working, we look forward to time off. When we’re retired, we value having things to do that allow us to enjoy the newfound time that we have, or even time for an afternoon glamour nap!
At Retire and Thrive, we encourage people to think about creating purpose, meaning, and connection in retirement, because we know that these are required to feel fulfilled. Because once you retire, and you know what finances you have in place, it’s time and what you do with it that you’ll most value. I work with many people who have no idea what they’ll do, sometimes working longer as a result. Sometimes people begin retirement, confident about how it’s going to be but after a few weeks, suddenly stop and say “what now?” Sadly, as an HR professional, I’ve even had people ask to return to work because they’re bored and don’t know what to do. So I encourage everyone to think about the ‘what to do’ of retirement – a simple question that often doesn’t have a simple answer.
